Under Siege: A Syrian Diary
Striking notes of hope
Despite the fact that death is always so close to us, it sometimes just takes a guitar for us to feel alive

The most beautiful thing about the participants in the Syrian revolution is that they have very diverse backgrounds and interests but share one goal: replacing the regime of Bashar al-Assad with a democratic state.
In the house I am residing in, my flatmates and I come from very different backgrounds and have different hobbies.
Wael for example is a very talented chef.He is always creating new dishes with the little foodstuff available to us. I sometimes cook too but Wael is the number one.
Meanwhile, Malek, my dearest friend, has a very high artistic sense. He spends most of his time making short movies about the revolution.
But when shelling prevents him from leaving the house to film, he plays the guitar.
His playing has, in many instances, made us forget the sounds of bombardment.
Despite the fact that death is always so close to us, it sometimes just takes a guitar for us to feel alive.
