Rohullah Nikpa, one of Afghanistan's six Olympic athletes, won the nation's first medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the men's 68kg Taekwondo category.

Thursday's victory saw the 25-year-old beat out the host nation's Martin Stamper 5-3 to secure the bronze medal.

Nikpa previously brought home the Central Asian nation's first ever Olympic medal at the 2008 games in Beijing, where he earned another bronze in Taekwondo.

Congratulating Nikpa, the office of Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, said:

Afghan athletes have shown in recent years that they don't have less  talent than the athletes of other countries and with hard work and effort they  can hoist the flag of Afghanistan in the international sports arena.
