Amended charges against US soldier in Kandahar massacre
The United States Army has amended the charges against Robert Bales, the soldier accused of premeditated murder in a pre-dawn raid on two villages in the southern province of Kandahar in March.
Bales' attorney Emma Scanlan, said she received the new charges Friday.
The amended charges see the counts of premeditated murder drop from 17 to 16, with officials saying their initial count was based on the duplication of one victim's name.
Also among the new charges are accusations of wrongfully possessing steroids and the unlawful consumption of alcohol while on deployment.
Bales is also now charged with an additional count of assault, bringing the total to seven.
Charging documents say Bales used his hands and knees to "unlawfully strike" an unknown Afghan male in February.
