Khar: Afghan-Taliban talks 'cannot be held in Paris or Berlin'

Last modified: 13 Dec 2012 02:21

Speaking to the French newspaper, Le Monde, Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistani foreign minister, has said talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government should take place in Kabul, not foreign capitals.

Khar's comments on Wednesday, come ahead of a meeting scheduled in Paris later in the month.

It's up to the Afghans to choose which method they think is good ... If they want to go to Washington, they can ... But we think that the best solution is to hold the talks on Afghan soil, in Kabul ... The talks and negotiations cannot be held in Paris or in Berlin.

The Taliban are sending two representatives to talks in Paris on December 19 and 20, where officials from the government of Hamid Karzai, Afghan president,  will be present.

The group has officially taken the line that they will not negotiate with the Kabul government, which they often refer to as a "puppet" of foreign nations.
