Riot police fire tear gas to disperse protests near tourist areas west of Manama

Last modified: 15 Jun 2012 23:02

Bahraini riot police used tear gas to disperse a protest organised by the main opposition bloc al-Wefaq on Friday.

The protest was part of a weekly demonstration organised by the opposition bloc, but this week they had decided to hold the rally closer to tourist areas, shopping
centres and hotels just west of the capital Manama.

The Bahrain authorities had deemed the protest illegal for this reason, but scores of defiant anti-government activists still gathered in the beach area.

Riot police turned out in force and warned protesters that their gathering was illegal over megaphone before firing tear gas.
