Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from Cairo, said: "We do understand from family sources that Hosni Mubarak is improving, we believe he is still in a coma."

"The state TV has now formally reported that he is in an intensive care unit in Maadi military hospital," he said.

"Earlier on in the evening there were reports that his heart had stopped, attempts to resuscitate failed, he was transported from Tora prision to military hospital.

"We understand that his wife Suzane has arrived at the hospital."
