Sources tell Al Jazeera that Mohamed ElBaradei, a presidential hopeful and the former chief of the United Nation's nuclear watchdog, has been approached by the ruling military council to take on the role of prime minister and form a new government following the resignation of the existing cabinet.

ElBaradei is said to be hesitating as he seeks assurances on his authority to appoint ministers.
