EU congratulates Egypt

The European Union on Monday urged newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to continue down the road of democracy, as they congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood candidate on his election win.

"For the first time in history, Egyptians have been able to choose their president in a democratic process. This is a major milestone in Egypt's political transition," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso noted in a statement.

"I hope that under your leadership, Egypt will see through further socio-economic reforms and that all Egyptians will be able to enjoy their full democratic rights and fundamental freedoms," Barroso added.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz warned that Europe would only be "next to Egypt on its path to reform, democracy and prosperity" if the new government respects its population's demands for "greater freedom, dignity and recognition." [DPA]
