Turnout in the final round of Egypt's presidential election has so far been higher than in the first round, a local monitoring group said on Saturday, some three hours after polls opened at 8 am (0600 GMT).

The Egyptian Alliance for Election Monitoring said women and the elderly were the main voters.

"The rise in voting in the run-off indicates that the overall turnout will be high compared to the first round," said Hafez Abu Saeda, the coordinator general of the alliance.
