Points from beginning of elections commission press conference
Some of the points made by Farouq Sultan, the head of Egypt's presidential elections commission and chief justice of supreme court, at the start of a press conference to announce the winner of Egypt's presidential runoff:
- Sultan accused unnamed political factions of lying about the election process, and of campaigning against the commission; he said there's also been manipulation in the media
- Sultan defended the supreme court's decision not to bar Ahmed Shafiq from the election, saying that the "isolation law" was political and unconstitutional
- Sultan has praised the commission's work under what he called "difficult circumstances" over the last few months, and he's defended the commission's "independence and integrity" in the face of all of this supposed political meddling
- Sultan said in total there were 456 complaints filed by the two candidates
