Syria on Monday wished good luck to Egypt's president-elect Mohamed Morsi saying that it supported "the democratic choices of the people."

"Syria supports the democratic choices of the people. We congratulate the Egyptians for their choice and wish good luck to the new president," foreign ministry spokesman Jihad al-Makdissi said.

The Syrian National Council (SNC), the main opposition bloc that has supported an ongoing uprising against al-Assad's government, said on Sunday that the election of the Muslim Brotherhood candidate gave "high hopes" to the Syrian people, who are "victims of a war of extermination and oppression."

The SNC also expressed the hope that Morsi would support the cause of the Syrian uprising. The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood is one of the most influential groups in the SNC. [AFP]
