Thousands converge on Tahrir
Last modified: 5 Jun 2012 23:24
The turnout in Tahrir Square tonight sounds larger than the past few nights. Thousands of people turned out to protest against Ahmed Shafiq, the former Mubarak-era prime minister now in this month's presidential runoff.
Beyond that, though, there was little unity among the demonstrators. A large contingent of Muslim Brotherhood supporters turned out, according to witnesses, and many of them used the protest as an opportunity to promote Mohammed Morsi, their presidential candidate. There were scuffles between Brotherhood activists and protesters who plan to boycott the runoff election.
