Socialist candidate Francois Hollande leads over incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy in the first round of French presidential race, according to initial official projections.

The two candidates will go into a runoff after Hollande won 28.4 per cent of the vote in the first round, compared to Sarkozy’s 25.5 per cent.
