It has been a triumphant day for Francois Hollande. 

The left wing politician will be France's first Socialist leader in nearly two decades, defeating the incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.

Hollande flew from his homebase Tulle to Paris, and addressing jubilant supporters, promised to challenge Europe's pro-austerity policies.
