There have been overnight reports of a suicide bombing in southern Afghanistan that has killed four members of the Afghan National Police (ANP) force.

The Thursday night explosion in Helmand province came before a NATO helicopter crash led to the deaths of four US soldiers in Garamsair district.

According to the local Pajhwok news agency, members of the ANP were eating dinner at a checkpoint in the Lagrai bazaar area when a suicide bomber blew himself up.

A local police commander was among the four dead. Another seven people were wounded in the blast.

Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said the group claimed responsibility for the blast and helicopter crash.

Though, helicopters crash in Afghanistan with some regularity, Taliban activity is rarely the cause.
