Al Jazeera's David Poort, reporting from Triopli, attended a press conference where US senator John McCain was speaking:

"I don’t know what the results will be but I do know that so far all indications are that it has been free and fair. The United States of America will work co-operatively and productively with whatever government the Libyans will choose. I am confident in the judgment of the Libyan people today that they will be satisfied with the result of the election," said McCain.

When asked whether an Islamist government would be good for Libya or in the interest of the US, McCain said: "I think the best thing for Libya is not have Muammar Gaddafi massacring his own people."

Of the process of carrying out the historic elections in Libya, the Arizona Republican said," It is not a perfect election but so far international observers have said it is a good and fair election."
