Libyan ambassador to Brazil, Salem al-Zubaidi, said on Friday that he supports the rebel government instead of leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Al-Zubaidi, who defended Gaddafi last week, took down the official Libyan flag and hoisted the new rebel flag to show the embassy's recognition of the new temporary government.

In a brief news conference, al-Zubaidi, said he would maintain his post at the embassy and serve the interests of the transitional government.

"I want to declare my loyalty to the (rebel) council and will continue to act as Libya's ambassador to Brazil by serving the interests of the Libyan people at the full service of the National Transitional Council, until someone is designated to fulfill this role," he said.

Many Libyan embassies around the world have taken similar steps to recognize the transitional government led by anti-Gaddafi forces. - Reuters
