Lochte won the 400m individual men's medley swimming gold with a time of 4:05.18, beating Thiago Periera of Brazil and Kosuke Hagino of Japan. 

Michael Phelps, the US swimmer who was such a sensation at the last Olympics in Beijing, finished fourth.
