A self-described military coordinator of the Free Syrian Army claimed on Wednesday that nearly half of the country was now under rebel control.

Speaking in Istanbul, Ahmed Kasem said that "around 40 per cent" of Syria was held by opposition forces.

Kasem also noted that "other sources" believe about 60 per cent of the country is controlled by the Free Syrian Army.
