Iran still believes Kofi Annan's six-point plan to end the conflict in Syria stands a chance, the country's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has said.

"I think we have to give Mr Kofi Annan enough chance to be able to push forward the six point plan. We have supported Mr Kofi Annan's plan, we have very explicitly indicated that, and we still support Mr Kofi Annan because we believe that he is doing his best as an impartial envoy of the UN to find a way out," Salehi said during a visit to Abu Dhabi.

Salehi warned the international community to be careful not to worsen the situation in Syria.

"My message to all countries that can play a role in this regard is to be very cautious and prudent and wise not to worsen the situation."

When asked whether he can envisage a Syria without Assad, Salehi said no ruler stayed in power for ever, but processes in Syria should be allowed to run their normal course.

"No ruler is an eternal ruler...There is a presidential election which is coming up in 2014. We will have to let the events to take its normal course."
