Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has warned that civil war may erupt in Syria should Bashar al-Assad be "unconstitutionally " removed from power.

Speaking on Monday following talks with Mario Monti, the Italian prime minister, Putin said:

We do not want the situation to develop according to the bloody scenario
of civil war and continue for no-one knows how many years as it happened in
Afghanistan.
