A Syrian expatriate activist group claims that fighting between rebels and the government has broken out for the first time since a a ceasefire went into effect on Thursday morning.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said army deserters, who make up a powerful part of the armed opposition, fought army troops in the village of Khirbet Joz, close to the Turkish border.

The Observatory said tanks had been deployed in the area before the fighting.
