Several hundred people protesting in Aleppo, Syria's second city, were attacked by hundreds of pro-Assad shabiha, or semi-official plainclothes militiamen, who wielded knives and sticks, according to a local member of the Local Coordination Committees (LCC) opposition network who spoke with Al Jazeera.

The shabiha injured dozens of people before the police closed the area, in the city's Sakhour district. The LCC later reported that two people had died after security forces opened fire.

Aleppo has been quieter than other restive cities and towns but is beginning to show more signs of dissent.
