Al Jazeera's Rula Amin reports that Syrian activists are "disappointed" with al-Assad's speech, as they were expecting "more clear announcements" and "concrete steps".
"They say it is not enough," she said.
Anita McNaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Turkey, is at the Yayladagi refugee camp, and reports that impromptu anti-Assad demonstrations broke out after the speech. Protesters chanted, among other slogans: "No Bashar, didn't you suck enough of our blood? What did we do to you, we only asked for freedom!"
When asked what one resident of Jisr al-Shughur thought of the Syrian president's plea that people from the town should return so that the military could protect them, he said: "Come back? He wants us to come back so that he can finish us off!"
