Yemeni army advances into key city of Zinjibar

Last modified: 12 Jun 2012 12:41

Yemeni troops made major advances today into the southern city of Zinjibar, a major bastion of al-Qaeda-associated fighters, shortly after it recaptured the nearby town of Jaar, a military official told the AFP news agency.

"The army has entered Zinjibar and has reached the centre of the city," said the official.

Zinjibar was captured by radical Muslim fighters in May 2011.

The official said the fighters were still putting up a fight in other parts of Zinjibar, but expected "the fall of the city within hours".
